THE RIGHT FIT
In order to take advantage of the great deals we have at Augustus Brine, you need to know some basic rules.
- Never
rely on tagged sizes. They can be very misleading as sizes vary greatly
from designer to designer. Always use your own measurements and compare
to ours, as we hand measure every item in our store.
- For
jackets, your chest measurement is the most important. If your chest
measures 40" you likely wear a size 40, but that doesn't mean the jacket
measures 40" as it would be skin-tight! In nearly every instance, the
actual measurement would be 4" to 6" larger. For example, a size 40
jacket would have a chest measurement of 44" to 46". Jacket sleeve
lengths are the easiest alteration as there is nearly always an extra
inch or more that your tailor can let down. Jacket lengths are important
as they are either short, regular or long. Just make sure that the
jacket covers your posterior.
- Don't
underestimate the value of a good tailor, and don't be intimidated.
You're better off with a minimal wardrobe where everything fits right
than a large collection of clothes that just don't work. Shirts, pants,
jackets... nearly everything can be tailored just for you. It's a common
misconception that tailors are expensive.
- Pants
are easy to alter, to avoid that "sloppy" look so common these days.
They should not be tight around your waist, and should stay put without a
belt. There should be no pulling across the front, especially visible
when pockets flare out. Dress pants should have a slight break where the
bottom meets your shoe. Pleats are great and offer a nice, sharp
crease, but avoid multiple pleats unless you're going for that '80s
look. Cuffs are great with lighter fabrics as they help weigh down the
leg.
- A
premium shirt is a sound investment and can make all the difference in
your comfort. A fine shirt, well cared for, can last a very long time. A
good tailor can make adjustments to sleeve length and collar
measurement.

MEASURING
It's
easy to take your measurements. Be sure to keep the measuring tape snug
but not tight. Then, compare them to our size chart. If you happen to
be between sizes, then simply buy a size up; your tailor will have
enough extra material to give you a tailored look.
- NECK
- measure around the base of your neck where the collar sits, inserting
a finger between your neck and the tape to allow for a comfortable fit.
- CHEST
- place a firm and level tape under your arms and measure around the
fullest part of your chest, over the shoulder blades at the back.
- WAIST - measure around your natural waistline. Keep one finger between the tape and your body for an accurate fit.
- HIP - measure around the widest part of your hip.
- SLEEVE
LENGTH - with your arm slightly bent, measure from the center of the
back of your neck, over your shoulder and down to your outer wrist.
- INSEAM - measure from the top of the inner pant leg seam (your crotch) to the bottom.
- RISE - measure from your crotch seam to the front of the pant waistband.
